On the other side of town, Parts Gallery is showcasing works that range in price from $50 to $500, with a focus on Gary Clement’s thoroughly nutty ink-on-paper musings.
The static equivalent of a stand-up comedian, Clement alternates between broad stroke (literally and figuratively) parodies of contemporary mores to quieter, sad-sack-with-a-grin jabs at human frailty, hubris, and the lumpy resignations of adult life. Underneath all his giggling, however, Clement is an assured draftsman, an artist who knows when to zero in and when to spin outward, pinpoint or relax focus. If only he would do a line of cards, he’d make a fortune.

THE NEIGHBORS

I was living in an artist’s loft space in Brooklyn with my wife and newborn daughter when the owner decided to convert the building into a luxury condo. We needed enough space to live and work and found ourselves looking further and further outside metropolitan NY. We ended up settling about 25 miles north, moving into a modest mid-century home in a town filled with bankers and lawyers and diplomats -- the complete antithesis of an artist community, dirty sidewalks replaced with manicured lawns.

The basement became my new studio. I spent hours at a time in my own world, unaware of my surroundings…until every so often, I would come up for air. Many afternoons, I found myself walking among the virtual mansions right outside my door. I began to fixate on them, my imagination going wild as I wondered about the people inside, my neighbors. I returned to my studio and began combining luscious oils and ironic narrative to invite myself into a world that both attracts and repulses me. Whether this world is reality or strictly fantasy, it almost doesn’t matter. They’re the neighbors I’ve come to know.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Wood studied at California Institue of the Arts, Art Center in Switzerland and received his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design.
He currently lives and works in New York.

Martie Giefert's photographs usually begin with a long drive. Upon arriving at his pre-determined location he sets up his tripod and scrupulously documents the chosen view from multiple angles. The negatives are then scanned for digital interface, where they are meticulously re-assembled into a final image. It is then printed and face-mounted to a sheet of acrylic for an unadorned presentation. The finished piece is hung 'floating' off the wall. When viewing the work, all the logistics fade into a calm silence and Gieferts photograph becomes more than a document of a place, but closer to the experience of occupying the space.

There is a poem by John Keats that charges Sir Isaac Newton with destroying the poetry of the rainbow by "reducing it to a prism".
It is a prevalent perception that art and science are at odds.

I came across this text about the time I started putting these pictures together and the discord resonated with me on a personal level.

Often I would take my young daughter to this park on Lake Ontario and we would skip stones and chat. One afternoon, after a rainfall, we saw a full rainbow on the horizon and she began asking me about it. Now, I don't claim to know everything about light refraction and the photoreceptor outputs in our brains that cause the gradient hues to look like bands of colour, and even if I did I surely wouldn't throw that in the face of a 5 year old. In reality she was just wondering if we could get a closer look, stand in what must be it's spectacular warmth and light, or maybe slide over its arc, you know, like the Care Bears do.

This body of work situates itself on that misty shoreline somewhere between science and art.

Newton did explain the rainbow, and that bit of science led to spectroscopy, which is how we know what stars are made of. This was also a clue to learning about an expanding universe and how big it is and how it all actually began. The point being, when you do explain something, you usually uncover still greater mysteries, which are even more beautiful.

When you first walk into Parts Gallery, you may wonder why the gallerist has placed painters Russell Leng and Judith Geher side by side. Two more apparently different painters would be hard to imagine.

Leng, an emerging artist from Vancouver, paints images of sharp, pointy crystals on solid or two-toned backdrops. His many faceted subjects block and absorb light in equal measure, and can be both cold, rendered in fractal variations of grey, and mysterious, filled with the ephemeral, untouchable inner light. Geher, conversely, is almost too expressive. Her portraits of young women are rendered in gooey daubs, liquid strokes, and occasional splats of honey sweet pigment. Geher has more flesh tones on her palette than any three makeup counters, and is happy to let them slide together like butter takes to cream, milk to sugar.

Underneath this seeming dichotomy, however, lurks a fascination, evident in both sets of paintings, with the act of mark making. Leng’s twinkling crystals, diamond hard as they are, are created via the faintest of brushstrokes, a whispering, feather light application of paint to panel. Geher’s fresh-face, blossoming young women are brought to life with unapologetically aggressive brushwork, with a shatter, stab, and cut abandon. It’s as if the two artists met, agreed on their topics, then swapped painting styles – for fun, and to disrupt our expectations of how their culturally loaded subjects ought to be conveyed.

Hats off to Parts Gallery for introducing Leng’s Ginger Rogers to Geher’s Fred Astaire.

Driving Art Up the Wall: Jeff Harrison

This past week, I've gone to a few fun shows that have artists working intensively with walls. All three are recommended for a drop by. For his exhibition at Parts Gallery, pictured above, Jeff Harrison takes his characteristically crazy-busy canvas style and extends it onto screenprints on newsprint, which paper the walls. Extra prints were handed out for free at the opening, and Parts tells me they still have a few on hand if you'd like. My favourite work in the show was was a work that spelled out "GRAVY," a word which seemed to sum up, for me, the enjoyable excess that characterizes Harrison's best work.

The walls are covered with hand-pulled one of a kind screenprints done on newsprint and the canvas paintings are hung over that.
It all makes for a truly ebullient exhibition.

At the Parts Gallery in Leslieville, Judith Geher has a new set of paintings on display (also depicted in lead photo). The subtly textured portraits are done with acyclic on linen and oil on wood. Invoking static and strained moments, they play on density and rhythm to create frayed and discomforting images. Although they owe something, in a strictly figurative sense, to the glossy world of fashion and advertising, the sheen of that world is completely eroded, leaving a roughness that's marked out in harsh lines at the base of the image. These are then accented by a build up of bright and inviting colours. Her brush work is often a combination of lashing and imprinting, creating sometimes dangling details and at others jarring blocks of colour that decompose the forms.

JUDITH GEHER's latest body of work explores the quest for a personal identity in a world dominated by mediated images of "an idealized feminine aesthetic". Geher's contemporary figure paintings are charged with a seductive and boldly romantic quality "fraught with longing and desire" while maintaining a modestly winsome manner. This gesture could also be seen in her painterly process. While some areas are built up with mounds of colour and paint other parts are left bare to allow the natural background to show through.

Vancouver-based painter Fiona Ackerman’s new acrylics on canvas, currently on display at Parts Gallery, are an excellent example of what psychologists call “associational logic.”

When you describe the individual parts of a given Ackerman painting, then add said parts together, the math ought not to hold. But her paintings do cohere, and cohere wonderfully, largely because they remain true to their own interior, wholly idiosyncratic, systems of logic. Ackerman is a brave painter – always walking the dental-floss-thin tightrope between expertly composed and total train wreck.

In one painting alone, I found half loops and dendrites, sharp barbershop stripes and splayed, wobbly brush strokes, speckles against scales and flame licks paired with waves – and nothing seemed out of place. Ackerman’s mad colour combinations, cement greys sidling up to neons, tangerines making nice with paper-bag browns, would cause sensible colour theorists to throw up their twiggy arms in high dismay. But Ackerman makes the odd couples dance, mostly by knowing exactly how much ballroom floor space to give them.

It takes a lot of careful planning to make a painting come across as both superficially haphazard and, on further inspection, deeply studied. I suspect Ackerman scrapes off as much paint as she applies. One of her key strategies, I’m guessing, is to compose each painting around a central organic form, or cluster of forms, and then build out from that point.

The result of all this careful planning is, perversely, a set of paintings that carry the loose, shifting and untrustworthy physics of free-association daydreaming. The works also remind me, weirdly enough, of the interiors of aquariums, those microcosmic seascapes made up of luridly coloured, hyper-artificial coral and flora.

Pity the paintings are not waterproof.

Inspired by a book on the 1st World Fair in 1851 , the curatorial concept for Artificial Kingdom draws on the spirit of the Victorian era, characterised by huge advancements in industry, great inventions and over indulgence.

It was in this period of history when the museum gave way to private collections and adventurers struck out into the untamed world to return home with a bounty of treasures from faraway places. A cabinet of curiosities, or vitrine was a common conversation piece in an affluent household and reflected the attitude and thirst for knowledge of the times.

Fiona Ackerman's multi-layered process blossoms into a lush arrangement of natural wonders from strange and exotic places.

Bradley Wood's masterful paintings offer a glimpse into the world-weary parlours of the cosmopolitan class. The suggested narratives reflect a malaise common of an empire burdened by the weight of their own excess.

A Canadian artist displays latest exhibition at Herringer Kiss Gallery
Vancouver artist, Siobhan Humston, brings nature and art together in her latest exhibition, Presage, at the Herringer Kiss Gallery.

“Nature has always been my inspiration because I’ve always lived in the city," she said. "Even when I’m travelling, I live in cities. Because of that, I’ve had the strong pull for nature that I just can’t get away from.”
For this exhibit, Humston made and used her own pigments to illustrate important issues in the environmental world such as the disappearing of coral reefs and endangerment of honeybees.

“I used pigments that I’ve made myself from various medium grounds (can be found in the form of chalks, silica and marble dusts) and adding water," Humston said. "It acts differently than acrylic, almost like a dye. The different layers create a little bit of magic, especially since it’s dealing with nature and how water and paint work together, it’s just natural.”

Humston’s signature style of circular shapes combined with the curvy lines and bright hues were well received by viewers.

Jeremy and Trina Quickfall, who have been to multiple exhibits at the Herringer Kiss Gallery, said they felt Humston’s work was different than her other pieces they have seen in the past.

“I felt it was a bit whimsical, it showed a kind of a chaos in nature theme," Trina Quickfall said. "It’s a nice change from other artwork we’ve seen, it’s just kind of happy.”

Deborah Herringer Kiss, owner of the gallery, explains why they've kept interest in Humston’s work.

“I was immediately drawn to the organic nature of Siobhan’s work and deep rich colours," Herringer Kiss said. "Her work has always been consistent and well received with our clients and we are happy to continue to show her and promote her.”

Incorporating the natural environment with a soft and feminine feel makes Presage stand out from previous exhibits, added Herringer Kiss.

“It differs from her other show in that she is using different materials," Herringer Kiss. "This time she is using mahogany veneer and raw pigment rather than acrylic, so she really experimented with the medium which gives the work a different feel. She’s also thinking about the environment and fragile, yet beautiful, elements in nature."

Humston is from southern Ontario where she studied music and theatre and later fine arts. She earned her fine art degree at Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork, Ireland and currently resides in Vancouver, B.C.

Presage is Humston’s second exhibit at the Herringer Kiss Gallery and will be on display until May 12. The Herringer Kiss Gallery is located at 709A 11th Ave. S.W. Fresh eye-popping brilliance from Jeffrey Harrison and Brooke Pickett

Louisianna-born artist Brooke Pickett's work came into focus soon after witnessing the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina. She begins each painting with a still life composed from common objects put together in uncommon ways and continues to collage and edit as she paints until she finds her way to abstraction. Perhaps, in some way, the only course to begin understanding parts of reality.

Murray Duncan's process begins with a vintage medical illustration depicting an anatomical figure, more specifically , the male nervous system. The image is then blown-up, cropped, painted, scratched, and scribbled over with stream of conciousness . Finally, the collage is encapsulted in a resin which acts to perserve the expressive process as well as creating an unpenetrable barrier.

Grace - Humston

As I was hanging recent works by Siobhan Humston and Kelly Grace in the gallery this week, I was reminded of a term I heard used in an archictectural context. It describes a perfect little detail that transcends it's mere function and becomes something like poetry. It is called a "moment" .

Kelly Grace's suite of spare but carefully crafted drawings based on film stills from Hitchcock's Rear Window, depicts actress Grace Kelly looking out toward something beyond the frame (offscreen). Yet there remains an inescapeable feeling that it is her that is being watched evoking a tense relationship between the viewer and the viewed.

On the other wall, Siobhan Humston paintings shimmer with light and movement and depth. The 23"x78" Oxygenated painting soars into the microcosm and macrocosm of the universe guided only by senses. They are like images of an harmonious but elusive connection to the natural world around us.

It seems both artists arrive at this moment by alternate paths.

A new two person show is up in the front room at 1150 Queen St East

We are excited about bringing New York based artist Jennifer Sanchez's recent mixed media pieces on paper to Toronto for the first time. We brought her work to the Interior Design Show in February to great acclaim.

Also exhibiting new oil paintings by Toronto artist Kathleen Weich. We've been showing Kathleen's work for 7 years now and her brilliant pallet knife surfaces, thoughtful compositions and shifting colour palette are consistently soul soothing.

This pairing demonstrates the dynamics of abstract painting. Dazzling and urgent, serene and resonant. Sometimes all in one eyeful.
